This has been an amazing week for the Apple Pay team

Watching Apple since 1999. I don't say what they should do. I say what they might do. They sometimes do.

Still doesn’t work at 99% of the vendors I go to. Not so amazing to me.

Poor lamb. Works at all of mine: Supermarkets, book shops, public transport, even bars. Perhaps you should change your shops?

    • Rocwurst says:

Here in Australia in the 6 months since I signed up for an ANZ credit card, I’ve only encountered one store where I once wasn’t able to use my Apple Watch to tap my wrist and pay – and that was because the contactless PayPass terminal in the drive-thru window at the Hungry Jack’s store was temporarily offline. It was working again the following day.

Even all of our vending machines work with Apple Pay.

EVERYWHERE here in Australia supports Apple Pay, so much so that I have started leaving my fat uncomfortable wallet at home on many occasions as Apple’s solution is so reliable. It is glorious living in a country with a modern contactless payments infrastructure.

I do feel sorry for those of you stuck with such an archaic retail POS landscape in the USA. It’s a surprising example of how the USA isn’t a world leader in more areas than one would have expected.

  2. James says:

Second that comment, Apple Pay means one less thing to carry around. Anywhere I use a card I can use Applepay in Australia

  3. Ferd Birfle says:

So many people fail to realise that Apple Pay is just an implementation of a contactless payments standard. I blame the way Apple talked to their US customers about it.

Also, anyone making claims along the lines of “doesn’t work at 99% of the vendors I go to” really needs to tell us where (in terms of geography and retailers) they are talking about. Like Jonny, Rocwurst and James said, contactless is pretty much universal in the ‘developed world’ – the only real problem is the number of “cash only” traders, notably cafes and other food outlets.

If you do find a store that takes contactless but Apple Pay doesn’t work and that bothers you, take your business elsewhere – and tell them why you’re leaving.
