Here come the first M5 Macs and new displays, too

Apple is, it seems, cooking with gas, with expected but still exciting new Mac product launches planned both later this year and early next. It’s Mac season all over again, and that means the first ever M5 Macs, even while competitors struggle to keep up with the M3.
M5 MacBook Air, an M5 MacBook Pro, and new Display
The latest news from Gurman’s magic keyboard is that Apple plans to introduce an M5 MacBook Air, an M5 MacBook Pro, and new Studio Display.
That’s on top of the other releases we expect, including an M5-powered Vision Pro and iPad Pro, a new Apple TV and HomePod products. Then a new iPhone 17e and entry level iPad are both scheduled toward the end of Q2 next year. So, it’s busy season at retail, I suppose.
The Apple displays are interesting, as it plans two of these, both allegedly with 27-inch sizes. The most likely enhancements for these displays will include new audio support (Dolby Atmos etc), and much faster internal processors capable of supporting higher refresh rates.
Given Apple’s displays are already good enough for reference color monitors, it’s got to be tech tweaks of that kind that will be included in these new displays, alongside presumably FindMy and other smaller service improvements.
Apple Silicon eats its way up the performance charts
The M5 chips have always been expected to make an appearance this year. These chips are going to further catapult its processors ahead of the competition, putting it even higher up the Passmark charts – and all at lower wattage than others can achieve.
All of which spells positive as the company preps itself for the first 2nm M6 Mac processors presumably in another 18-months’ time. For Mac users pondering an upgrade it’s reasonable to anticipate a 10-15% performance boost on the last generation, and it’s looking increasingly likely the release will spark a big upgrade shift from those still using those older but still astonishingly capable M1 Macs.
When it comes to computers, at least, Apple truly is ascendant, and these are the years of the Mac.
