Apple’s N1 networking chip is fastest Wi-Fi yet on iPhone
Apple’s all-new self-made N1 networking chip in the iPhone 17 is delivering fantastic Wi-Fi performance, a new report from Oookla (owners of Speedtest.net) claims.
They are achieving significantly better speeds than we saw with the iPhone 16.
Raising the floor
The data shows fast Wi-Fi speeds in every region, which translates into snapper performance in contrast to the last generation devices. The report claims an overall 40% increase in performance in comparison, though this does vary across regions.
It is also interesting to note that the performance enhancements are particularly visible in regions with hitherto poor performance generally, which suggests Apple may have put some good technologies in place for this kind of connection.

“The iPhone 17 family delivered higher download and upload speeds on Wi-Fi compared to the iPhone 16 across every studied percentile (10th, median and 90th) and virtually every region. During the study period, the iPhone 17 family’s global median download of 329.56 Mbps was as much as 40% higher than the iPhone 16 family’s 236.46 Mbps. Upload speeds improved similarly, jumping from 73.68 Mbps to 103.26 Mbps,” Ookla said.
Notably, Ookla also states that the N1 delivers a far bigger generational uplift at the 10th percentile than at the 90th, implying Apple’s custom silicon lifts the floor more than the ceiling, “making for better performance” in challenging Wi-Fi conditions.
