Rumor: WWDC 2019 June; iPad/AirPower in March
Word appears to be spreading that Apple will hold WWDC 2019 in San Jose between June 3-7 this year, with a spring launch for new iPads and AirPower coming sooner on March 29.
The biggest event in Apple’s diary
WWDC (Worldwide Developer’s Conference) is Apple’s biggest annual event. This is where it announces new technologies, operating systems and software strategies to its most important customers: Developers.
This year should be particularly interesting, as we should see the next stage in Apple’s plans for Project Marzipan, and new APIs developers can use to port their apps from iOS to Mac.
A MacRumors source claims this key event will take place in early June. Other weekends in that month are already unavailable, the report claims, adding that the city authority has already received an application to permit an open-air party on June6.
What can we expect?
It’s hard to say with any great certainty. Of course, Apple will introduce new versions of iOS, macOS, tvOS and watchOS. I anticipate activity around ARKit 3.0 and the evolution of new partnerships in that space. And, of course, where else might Apple introduce the next-generation Mac Pro?
March 29: New iPads, AirPods and AirPower too
There’s a second date that may be worth noting down: March 29. That is when Apple is now expected to hold a spring event at which it may launch new AirPods, a (possible but uncertain) brand-new iPad mini, a new iPad and (potentially) the long-delayed introduction of AirPower.
No news yet on what everyone is hoping to see, iPhone SE 2. Perhaps that beast is mythical.
What about Apple’s much-discussed new TV streaming service?
9-5macthinks this will be the Big Star at a third special event in April, ahead of WWDC. So that WWDC opening video could reflect that new service in some way, I suppose.
So, that’s three events:
- Late March: New iPads etc.
- Late April: Potential streaming services launch
- Early June: WWDC
