New Aliro standard opens doors for enterprise security

Are you ready for smart security everywhere? Just in case you are there’s a new smart lock standard in town, one that combines access control with identity. It comes from the trans-industry group behind the Matter standard, the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA).
The new solution is called Aliro 1.0 and it’s being described as, “a standardized communication protocol between access readers and user devices.”
Aliro is supported by most leading tech companies including Apple, Google, and Samsung alongside key integrators such as STMicroelectronics, Infineon, and others.
That wide industry support is critical as it provides a path toward standardized digital credentials. That matters because so much of this space is presently occupied by divergent approaches, which generates complexity in deployment and future use.
It may also expose users to future security problems as smaller players may be unable to invest sufficiently in ensuring future system security. It also acts as a universal arbiter for interoperability certification, significantly reducing research and development costs for locking system manufacturers.

What does Aliro 1.0 do?
The standard provides a physical access control system for use by government, enterprise, health, and consumer markets. The way to understand it is that it acts as a core technology other companies can work with.
For an iPhone user it might mean they’ll be open the doors at corporate HQ using the Wallet app even while a colleague uses another device platform and some may use an entry fob. While the front end tech experience may change, the same standard will do the background work.
In use you’ll use Aliro’s tech to security authenticate electronic access systems, exploiting a combination of solutions to do so, including Near Field Communication (NFC), Bluetooth Low Energy, and Ultra-Wideband. This combination of technologies also means these systems should work in areas that lack network coverage.
There are some critical features within the framework, not least its focus on privacy. To achieve this it uses asymmetric cryptography to ensure secured and trusted interactions between user devices and readers, while respecting user privacy.
To ensure global reliability, Aliro includes a comprehensive certification program and supporting test suites managed through Authorized Test Labs. The CSA says the standard will be made available across its 220 member companies, including lock manufacturers, for use in their systems.
What happens next?
We are told this is the beginning of a longer journey. CSA says it is intends building the standard up so it can handle other needs, such as secure key sharing, which should be of great use. The group also says that as it does build out the standard it intends to maintain backwards compatibility.

UPDATE: Products are appearing
No sooner did I write about this than Silicon Labs made contact to let me know that Durin, Inc. has selected the Silicon Labs MG24 wireless SoC as the secure, multiprotocol foundation for the Durin Door Manager, a next-generation access device that supports Aliro and should ship in Q1 26.
“Aliro is a big deal because it provides standards-based access and transactions between the homeowner’s mobile wallet and their smart door lock.”,” said Colin Cureton, Vice President of Product Lines, Home, Silicon Labs.
“MG24 gives innovators like Durin a single, secure wireless platform to validate credentials, protect keys, and do all this at the speed end-users demand thanks to the MG24’s cryptography accelerator. As the industry rallies behind Aliro, Silicon Labs is focused on helping manufacturers get to certified, market-ready products faster.”
One more thing
With Apple thought to be looking more closely at the smart home market, what opportunity may exist for unique Apple security product designs within the company’s future smarthome ecosystem? A FaceID-compliant locking system can’t be terribly far away, though I do wonder how many people will still insist on also using a traditional physical lock to protect their homes if such a system ever appeared.
