Apple in India: Trouble at Tata

A regulator in India has warned that it may cause a Tata component factory for iPhone to be shut down because it has contaminated groundwater for nearby farms.
Tata counters that it has sent in its own independent experts and its facility in Hosur, Tamil Nadu, is in “full compliance with all regulatory norms.”
Tatu makes back panels for iPhones at the factory, while India currently manufactures over 25% of iPhones sold worldwide, and that number is increasing.

A Reuters-derived report tells us five inspections have taken place at the facility so far this year. The problem seems to be that wastewater was discharged into a rainwater harvesting pond at the factory. That pond then overflowed, which contaminated the groundwater serving wells used by surrounding farms.
The Apple supplier says it is committed to good business practises including the protection of the environment and local communities. Apple has not commented on the matter, but it is unlikely to be particularly happy if environmental damage is being caused at its partner factory.
