iPhone 17 dials up fresh pre-order records, reports claim

Despite political tension, tariffs, and everything else that seems so seriously bad in the world, Apple seems to have secured a huge win in China, where preorders for the iPhone 17 have set new records. Sales are currently eclipsing previous models, analysts claim.

The data shows that sales via JD.com exceeded expectations with Yahoo Finance saying iPhone 17 sales there broke records in the first minute. Even Apple’s usually rock solid store experienced slowdowns as consumers in China rushed to pre-order the product, with many opting for the entry level iPhone 17 model.
Strong demand also in the US, where consumers continue to pivot toward the highest end iPhone Pro Max model, delivery of which is now tracking at 3-4 weeks.
What the analysts say
“Apple has astutely segmented its product line-up, ensuring each model appeals to distinct user needs,” Nabila Popal, senior research director at market research firm IDC told SCMP. “Collectively, these devices will drive a robust wave of new purchases for the company.”
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo this morning shared his data which also confirmed record sales, noting stronger combined preorders for the more traditional builds than the new iPhone Air. He still believes the Air will be a big success in future.
“The strongest demand is still for the Pro Max,” he wrote.
“The iPhone 17 Pro Max’s production volume in 3Q25 is approximately 60% higher than that of the 16 Pro Max in the same period last year, yet the shipping times remain similar… The iPhone 17 series’ pre-order performance is better than last year,” he said.
No surprise that Apple’s stock is surging as investors anticipate yet another successful product launch.
