Immersive WWII D-Day documentary hits Apple’s Vision Pro
As war crimes once again seem to become normalized on the global stage, it seems interesting to talk about a new D-Day documentary from TARGO and TIME Studios that has been made for Appe’s Vision Pro.
The documentary captures some of the legacy of one of the cameramen who joined the D-Day fight back all those years ago, capturing images from Omaha Beach that became iconic.
What happened on the beach
Richard Taylor, a brave combat cameraman, documented some of the most iconic footage of the Allied invasion of Omaha Beach, yet his story has remained largely untold.
The documentary follows his daughter, Jennifer Taylor as she goes on a transformative journey to uncover her late fatherʼs hidden legacy nearly 80 years later.
The 20-minute long immersive movie, “D-Day: The Camera Soldierˮ blends cinematic storytelling with immersive video, spatial video, and real-time 3D to create a historically rich journey through one of World War II’s most pivotal moments.
TARGO used Unityʼs platform to blend spatial video with real-time 3D, creating an immersive experience where history unfolds around the viewer.
Shot with Blackmagic Design cameras, the film captures Taylorʼs journey with stunning clarity. When watched using VisionPro the movie quite literally transports you to Omaha Beach during D-Day.
Blending the story with reality
“As an immersive director, my goal is to break the barrier between the audience and the story — and that’s exactly what D-Day: The Camera Soldier does,” said Chloé Rochereuil, Director in a statement. “It’s a documentary where immersion becomes the story. As Jennifer dives deeper into her father’s legacy, the viewer is drawn alongside her, transitioning seamlessly between different levels of immersion in the media.”
Victor Agulhon, CEO & Co-Founder of TARGO, spoke about the transformative power of Unity in creating this interactive project: “Unity gave us the tools to blend spatial video, immersive video, and real-time 3D into a seamless, immersive experience. It allows us to reimagine how history is told, bringing audiences closer to the past in a way that’s both emotional and deeply personal.ˮ
Starting today, D-Day: The Camera Soldier is available exclusively in the App Store for Apple Vision Pro users.
