Poll: Will You Use Face ID?

Jonny Evans

Watching Apple since 1999. I don't say what they should do. I say what they might do. They sometimes do.

It looked like it still allowed for a pass code. I would hope so for those rrelated and close parties to be able to enter the phone.

    • Jonny Evans says:

Yes, you can still use a passcode. You don’t have to use Face ID — you can use Face ID for supporting apps, Apple Pay, iTunes, opening the phone, but can also toggle different uses off.

Whether or not you like it, the genie is out of the bag, not because of the security, but because of our appeal to vanity of being able to link our facial features to apps such as animoji. We will build our game characters based on our features, we will shop with our features integrated, we will use it in social media, etc. ad infinitum. As a device to unlock the phone, it is very convenient in most scenarios, but there are cases (carplay asking me to unlock the phone comes to mind) that I simply push the botton without looking at the phone. That is no longer a use case.

Complicated feature adding Face ID. Currently, my most important apps only use Fingerprint ID, and/or a PIN. I would need to design a passcode for those apps individually, and I would probably forget each time. My password locker is getting lengthy these days. Anyone else have this concern?

    • Jonny Evans says:

Thing is Ronald, if you think about it — Touch ID and Face ID are conveniences — they were never the hard security at the centre of the system, that is and will always be the alphanumeric passcode you use to open the device.

Not using face id on my X. Husband can’t get to X , grandson can’t play games in the car without hassle. Car play is working ok with my audiobooks, haven’t tried other apps. while driving alone.. Will have to try the “brake” on face id to see if this is viable or too much trouble to reset X.
